Musalia Mudavadi says Mt Kenya lacks strong presidential candidate for 2022

ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi has said the vote-rich Mt Kenya region lacks a strong presidential candidate for 2022 at a time five leaders from the region have expressed their ambitions for the top seat.

In an interview with Inooro FM on Monday, September 7, the One Kenya Alliance principal said the lack of a strong presidential candidate in the huge voting bloc has made the region a hotcake for other presidential candidates including him.

“I will continue persuading them to support my bid since from the look of things, there is no strong presidential candidate from Mt Kenya this time round as we speak,” Mudavadi said.

While appearing to consider picking his running mate from the region, Mudavadi said the people of Mt Kenya region are experienced, given the number of times they have produced presidents (3 times since independence) hence they cannot be ignored in the 2022 succession matrix.

“There is a lot of experience in the region. They are people who love doing business and can contribute a lot to the economy and the nation. So, I am not saying no. There is a possibility (of picking a running mate from there),” he said.

It is understood that at least five people from the Mt Kenya region have announced their intentions to succeed retiring President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Last month, former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo officially announced his entrance into the presidential race bringing the total number of presidential aspirants from the Mt Kenya region to five.

A few months ago, businessman Jimmy Wanjigi who has been playing the role of a kingmaker in the recent presidential elections announced that he will be on the ballot on an ODM ticket in the 2022 presidential elections.

Others include National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria, and the little-known Kiambu Bishop Zablon Karanja Mbugua of the Biblical Pentecostal Apostolic Church.
