Musician-turned-politician Charles Njagua declines William Ruto’s offer

by Amos Khaemba

Charles Njagua alias Jaguar has turned down Deputy President William Ruto’s offer to be nominated as East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP following the disputed nomination process that saw him lose out on the UDA ticket.

Addressing hundreds of his supporters on Friday, April 22, Jaguar vowed that he will not be forced to abandon his Starehe constituency ree-lection bid.

The Kigeugeu hitmaker insisted he will be defending the parliamentary seat he won in 2017 as an independent candidate in the upcoming August 9 General Election.

“We won’t be coerced. Let us all unite and win this because we have an enemy with us. And after we are going for it as independent, we don’t want to care who will become president. Whoever wins we will work with them,” Jaguar started.

A visibly annoyed Jaguar wondered why DP Ruto could deny him the UDA certificate and instead coerce him with a post that his less interested in.

“I want to tell William Ruto without any fear that the EALA MP seat he was offering me should now go to Simon Mbugua’s wife,

“You cannot eject me from where I was elected and take me to Arusha. That seat should go to Mbugua’s wife because her husband will not be elected here,” the MP said, in an apparent address to William Ruto, as the supporters cheered.

The musician-turned politician blasted the Ruto-led party for being undemocratic after denying the Starehe electorate a chance to pick their preferred candidate.
On Thursday, April 21, pictures of Simon Mbugua having received the UDA certificate surfaced online much to the surprise of the singer who is finalizing his first term as a Member of Parliament.

The Starehe Constituency had its UDA primaries canceled last week due to what the party termed as security issues.

The National Elections Board of UDA resorted to the use of opinion polls to settle on popular candidates and Simon Mbugua was found to be the more popular than the incumbent MP Jaguar.
