Mutahi Ngunyi: Late Mwai Kibaki would have preferred a Raila presidency

by Amos Khaemba

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has claimed that the late President Mwai Kibaki would have endorsed the ODM leader Raila Odinga for the August presidential election.

Speaking on his YouTube channel,The Fifth Estate, Ngunyi suggested Kibaki would have preferred a Raila presidency for the continuity of the status quo as opposed to a William Ruto presidency who he claimed stands to bring fundamental regime changes.

According to Ngunyi, recent sentiments by the late Kibaki family members and historical happenings would have influenced Kibaki’s endorsement of Raila.

“He (Mwai Kibaki) could have told us, ‘listen to the person that has been closest to me, that person is his son Jimmy Kibaki, and Jimmy told us the other day that we are with Raila Odinga, so that is an endorsement from Mwai Kibaki,” Ngunyi said.

But Speaking on Monday, April 25, Jimmy Kibaki was on not forthright on his political stand only saying he will make his stand known after the burial of the late president.

“I have been under pressure for the last 5 years to join politics, especially by people who miss ‘mzee’ in politics. Now that I am the political face of the family I might consider joining politics,

“We will discuss after the sendoff maybe next week we will have a detailed sit-down,” Jimmy Kibaki said during an interview with NTV.

On the other hand, it should be remembered that after the end of his 10-year term in 2013, the former president completely kept off politics.

Even though it was rumored that the late Kibaki endorsed President Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto as his preferred successor he never made any public pronouncement over the same.
At the same time, it would be interesting to how the ODM leader reacted to a Kibaki endorsement, a person who they fought hard during the controversial 2007 elections.

The ODM leader accused the late Kibaki of stealing his election before barring hitches and forming a coalition government that saw Raila serve as the prime minister.
