Nairobi governor Anne Kananu responds to claims she is an alcoholic

by Enock Ndayala

Recently sworn-in Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu has refuted claims by Members of Nairobi County Assembly that she is an alcoholic.

Last week, a section of Nairobi county legislators led by Waithaka MCA Anthony Kiragu, accused Kananu of alleged incompetence and drunkenness.

“She (Anne Kananu) is an absentee governor. Kananu is never in the office. She is accused of being a drunkard and that she is always drinking in nightclubs. The bottle she moves around with contains alcohol. We know that and we shall address it. We shall soon discuss this in the Assembly,” Kiragu said.

But in an interview with the Star Newspaper on Monday, March 7, the county boss defended herself, saying she is not a drunkard.

Kananu said apart from being the governor, she is also a businesswoman who owns several nightclubs not only in Nairobi but across the region and that she frequently visits the businesses after work to see how they are faring.

“I own several businesses, including nightclubs in Nairobi and other counties. And as a director of various nightclubs, I have a right to visit my business premises and know how they are being managed. Does that make me a drunkard?” she posed.

As a businesswoman, Kananu stated that she holds some of the meetings on her business premises and that she is in control and fully committed to serving Nairobians at the county level.

While calling upon the legislator to remain focused in their legislation roles, Kananu condemned MCAs who were mentioning her name in bad faith, especially during the ongoing electioneering period.

Her sentiments were echoed by Imara Daima MCA Kennedy Obuya who said that it was wrong for the lawmakers to check on how, when, and where members of the executive, like Kananu, go to socialize.
