Nairobi governor ignored at Jamhuri day celebrations despite being the host

Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu was denied a chance to address the public at the Jamhuri day fete held at Uhuru Gardens on December 12.

This is besides her being the host of the event due to her capacity as the governor of Nairobi, where the celebrations were held.

In the Jamhuri day programme, Anne Kananu was set to address the invites just after the entertainment session was over.

She would then invite Deputy President William Ruto to speak, after which President Uhuru Kenyatta would become the last speaker.

However, this did not happen as she was not given the opportunity to speak or invite the key guests of the event.

This was different from past national celebrations, where the host governors address the gathering before inviting key guests to speak.

Hitherto, this was not the only breach in protocol at the Jamhuri day celebrations.

A similar breach was witnessed when President Uhuru Kenyatta invited ODM leader Raila Odinga to speak after concluding his speech.

Anne Kananu’s case has sparked wild speculations that the Nairobi Governor has ‘fallen out’ with the state barely a month after she was sworn into office.

At the time of her swearing-in, Anne Kananu pledged her support for President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

When she was sworn in as the Deputy Governor on January 15, Anne Kananu’s acceptance speech was full of praise for Uhuru Kenyatta.

“I thank his exellency the president and the party leader of Jubilee, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta for trusting me to serve in this position,” Anne Kananu said.
