Nairobi senator joins long list of politicians eyeing gubernatorial seat in 2022

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has declared his interest to vie for the highly-sort after Nairobi gubernatorial seat in next year’s General Election.

The first time senator said his track record speaks for itself exuding confidence that Nairobi residents will vote for him.

In 2017, Sakaja had also declared interest but stepped down in support of the former Nairobi County boss Mike Sonko.

“I have been listening to a lot of people who even then were not in support but now, realize, that we need someone like myself who has been in this city, has seen all this level of leadership,

“Am currently the senator and that is the direction I am heading to. To serve the people of Nairobi in the position of the governor with a proper vision of what we want to achieve within the next 10years,” Sakaja said.

While the Jubilee senator did not reveal which political party he will be using, it is a clear indication that Sakaja will contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat on an ANC party ticket.

After the presidential contest, the Nairobi gubernatorial race could be the country’s second most competitive and costly political showdown.

The coveted seat has attracted at least seven candidates for the 2022 General Election with more aspirants expected to throw their hat in the ring as the 2022 poll nears.

The battle lines for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat have been drawn between team handshake, being led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga versus the Hustler team being led by Deputy President William Ruto.

Some of the political heavyweights already jostling to take over the management of City Hall include former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi.

Others include former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiku, businesswoman Agnes Kagure, and current Acting Governor Anne Kananu with Senator Sakaja and Tim Wanyonyi being the latest entrants in the race.

Last week, Wanyionyi said he is in the race to become the third Governor of Nairobi County adding that he intends to vie on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

“Ladies and gentlemen, while I have made huge efforts and contributions to uplifting the lives of our people in Westlands Constituency for over 15years, I now have a bigger calling- to become the Governor of Nairobi County in 2022,” Wanyonyi said.
