Nakuru governor Lee Kinyanjui says he is seriously considering abandoning the ruling party of Jubilee ahead of the 2022 General Election.

Speaking during the swearing-in of county executive for youth, culture, sports and social services Sylvia Onyango on Wednesday, October 6, the first term governor made clear his association with the newly branded UPF, formerly the Citizens Conversation Party.

While likening his new outfit to the South African concept of Ubuntu, Kinyanjui said the ruling outfit is selfish as leaders are not to serve the people but they are after their selfish gains.

“It is time to return humanity into politics. Leaders have completely forgotten why they got into office and in the coming days, we explain the Ubuntu principle,” he said.

Kinyanjui who has announced plans to defend his gubernatorial seat in the 2022 General Election further said that his desire to ditch Jubilee was to better the livelihoods of the people.

“This must change as go towards the next General Election,” the governor said.

Kinyanjui has been a vocal defender of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake counterpart Raila Odinga and is considered to be the perfect running mate of the former prime minister.

Last week, the governor together with other three county bosses pledged to support Raila Odinga’s presidential candidature in 2022.

The Jubilee party which has announced plans to work with ODM in the 2022 General Election has been losing players to rival party including that of Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Movement.

Two weeks ago, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru announced that she will not be seeking to retain her gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee party ticket.

She earlier on said that it will be too hard for her to win the sean on a Jubilee ticket as the party that was once popular had lost its grip.

“If I ran today on a Jubilee party ticket and someone else ran on a different party, even if people felt I had performed, it would be hard to convince them to vote for me,” she said.
