NCIC sends warning after increased cases of political confrontations

by Enock Ndayala

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a warning to politicians involved in organizing political conflicts that have led to increased cases of political confrontations.

This comes barely a day after Deputy President William Ruto’s visit to Nyeri County was characterised by the high drama on Sunday, September 5, when youths opposed to his politics tried to stop his convoy.

NCIC Chairman Samwel Kobia in a statement to newsrooms on Tuesday, September 7, said political leaders must control their supporters and that they should allow their competitors to move freely across the country as the country heads into the 2022 elections.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a warning to politicians involved in organizing political conflicts that have led to increased cases of political confrontations.

“NCIC would like to warn politicians who have decided to lock their regions and make them unapproachable for their competitors to be ashamed of themselves and that we will be filing criminal charges should we find any of them responsible for such acts of intolerance,” Kobia said.

In its Roadmap to Elections Bila Noma, the commission said it intends to inaugurate the national symposia series as a platform for a national dialogue on all critical issues that will promote a peaceful electoral process in the run-up to, during, and after the 2022 elections.

“We have been there before in 2007/2008 when the country came close to the brink of a precipice. As NCIC we will spare no efforts in helping the country to never get back to that route,” the commission added.

Over the weekend, chaos erupted in Kieni constituency hours before a scheduled church event in which the deputy president was set to attend, making it the latest in a series of political confrontations.

This saw a car belonging to a Nakuru East MP David Gikaria, a Ruto ally, was reportedly pelted with stones in Narumoro while allies of Kieni MP Kanini Kega were ejected from the church where the DP was expected.
