Ndii: Raila stands to lose more if Supreme Court nullifies Ruto’s presidential win

by Enock Ndayala

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition captain Raila Odinga filed a petition at the Supreme Court seeking to nullify William Ruto’s presidential win.

In the petition, the former Prime Minister alleged that Ruto did not achieve the 50 percent plus one vote threshold required by the law to be declared the President-elect.

However, Economist David Ndii has said that Raila might lose more if the Supreme Court verdict is made in his favor.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition captain Raila Odinga filed a petition at the Supreme Court seeking to nullify William Ruto’s presidential win.

According to Ndii, if the Supreme Court of Kenya nullifies William Ruto’s presidential win, it will take up to 2027 for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to prepare for fresh elections.

Ndii, argues that Raila will not agree to take part in the repeat of presidential elections unless the electoral commission has been reconstituted and the current chairman Wafula Chebukati exits.

According to him, Ruto will not be disadvantaged as he will still remain the deputy president as Raila will go home.

“Azimio cultists wishing for rerun should contemplate the following scenario. Team opaque blocks it, deadline passes, constitutional limbo, Uhuru stays on until 2027, or revolution. Here’s the irony. WSR remains DP, Raila will be at home crying over his beer,” David Ndii said in a Tweet.

The seven judges of the apex court are expected to deliver their verdict on Monday, September 5.

Raila in his 72-page petition had made 23 prayers including the nullification of elections.

However, the ODM leader had also requested the court not to order fresh elections but rather declare him the fifth president-elect claiming that he won the elections.

“We want the courts (Supreme Court) to make that declaration that we won the presidential elections because that is the truth. Instead of going back to the ballot, we should be announced as the winners so that we can be sworn in,” Raila said.
