Negotiated democracy? Ruto, Raila allies forced to sacrifice their political ambitions

In March 2022, former Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale bowed out of the gubernatorial race and promised to drum up support for  Kenya Kwanza candidate Cleophas Malala.

Presidential front runners William Ruto and Raila Odinga have brokered a deal aimed at restraining fallouts that could arise from nominations.

Some of the deals have seen the allies of the two presidential front runners shelving their political ambitions in what the principals say is negotiated democracy.

While the deputy president has been retreating to his official Karen residence to broker a truce in some areas to avert potentially acrimonious UDA nominations, Raila has on the other side been rooting for consensus among his allies.

This has seen some of their allies drop their political ambitions in the August 9, General Election with a promise that they will land key jobs at the County or National governments should their teams emerge victorious.

“We want to consolidate our Kenya Kwanza team and face our opponents in a much more efficient and effective way,” William Ruto said.

For instance, the ODM party last week announced that at least seven hopefuls who were eying the Homa Bay gubernatorial seat shelved their ambitions in favor of Gladys Wanga.

Just like in ODM, yesterday, the DP announced a deal in which North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko’s opponent, Mary Kerubo Nyasimi, withdrew from the race.

Earlier on, the Kenya Kwanza presidential flag bearer had convinced Charles Matoke of ANC to shelve his ambition for the Kisii governor seat in favor of Nyaribari Masaba MP Ezekiel Machogu of UDA.

Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal who was recently absorbed into Ruto’s presidential campaign team on Tuesday, April 5, dropped his Senate bid in favor of incumbent Steve Lelegwe.

This happened just a few weeks after he convinced former Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale of UDA to shelve his gubernatorial ambitions in favor of Cleophas Malala of ANC.
