Students whose parents did not vote for Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo will not benefit from the County Scholarship program, the county chief has declared.

Speaking on Monday, January 22, while disbursing cheques to needy but bright students in the county, Nyaribo said parents whose voting cards are not within the county will also not benefit.

Nyaribo said parents who voted in other counties should go there and apply for scholarships and bursaries from where they voted.

“Those whose parents are not voters in Nyamira, you belong elsewhere where your parents vote. Go and apply for a bursary there. It is just like that,” the Governor said.

Nyaribo’s decision to bar ‘non-voters’ from accessing county scholarship funds has elicited scrutiny from a section of residents who say bright but needy students have been left out of the brackets.

For instance, Ms Mary Kemunto, a widow and a mother of three said she could not afford to educate her children after the county officials asked her to go and apply for a scholarship fund in the neighboring county where her late husband was buried.

“I do not know what to do now. I am struggling financially and need support to educate my children,” Kemunto said as quoted by the Daily Nation.

John Okemwa, who hails from Nyamira said his child was blacklisted from the programme because he did not participate in the 2022 General Election.

As part of the requirements, all children were asked to attach their parents’ voting cards if they wanted to be considered.

Kivumbi.co.ke understands that Nyaribo is not the only county boss working for those who supported his gubernatorial bid in the 2022 General Election.
