Nyamira MCAs engage in fistfight on the floor of the house

by Enock Ndayala

Members of Nyamira county assembly engage in a physical fight on the floor of the house on Tuesday following a disagreement moments before proceedings began.

Raban Masira, the legislator for Nyamaiya ward exchanged blows with his Rigoma counterpart.

Alongside them, was Ekerenyo MCA Thadeous Nyabaro who displayed his boxing skills on Gesima Ward’s Charles Maroko.

The fight began shortly after Speaker Moffat Teya read out the order paper. Few MCAs started shouting while the rest blew whistles, making the house uncontrollable.

Amid the disorder, legislators seated on the public gallery jumped over a barrier at the chambers, running to grab the mace.

The bone of contention was the introduction of a new name in the Committee of Appointments report.

This would see some of the Members de-whipped from crucial committees to make room for fresh talent.

The County Assembly Committee wanted to table Clifford Ogwara’s name to the Executive, an issue that was heavily contested by other members.

“MCAs are politicians and they are representing their people. When they disagree it means they are expressing the interests of their people. Let them express themselves as we look for a middle ground,” Speaker Moffat Teya told journalists after the order was restored in the house.

Nyamira County Assembly has proved to be somehow ungovernable, given that this was the fourth wrangle experienced in the house.

Last month, MCAs in the same house traded insults over a disagreement on a Committee report.

The MCAs said that the Committee was on a four-day retreat to Kisumu to Conduct house business but only pocketed allowances without doing the actual job.

For close to three hours, the house was filled with chaos and name calling from various corners.

The irate legislators dismissed a move by Leader of Majority Duke Masira who wanted to read a report by the Selections Committee, said to have been born from the controversial retreat.
