ODM director of elections asks Jimmy Wanjigi to respect ban on political gatherings

by Enock Ndayala

ODM director of elections Junet Mohammed has asked billionaire Jimmy Wanjigi to respect the government directive that suspended political gatherings to flatten the Covid-19 curve.

Mohammed said these just hours after ODM presidential aspirant was forced to scamper for safety after pro-Raila youths pelted stones at him in Migori County where he was addressing residents.

In a statement to newsrooms posted on Twitter, the Suna East Member of Parliament while condemning the incident warned Wanjigi not to hold political gatherings as earlier directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“I also urge aspirants to respect government public order and public health protocols as we continue to fight coronavirus pandemic,” he said.

Junet further asked security agencies to move with speed and bring the culprits of the violence to book saying that it was wrong for a section of youths to pelt stones at Jimmy Wanjigi.

He said Kenya is a democratic country where everyone can sell their policies freely and without interference unlike what Wanjigi encountered in Migori.

“While sponsors of political chaos in Migori are known, myself having been a victim in numerous occasions, this cannot go on,

“I call the police to thoroughly investigate this incident and bring all concerned to the firm grip of the law,” Junet said.

It is however ironic for Junet to ask Wanjigi to respect the ban on political rallies when he himself has been in the forefront leading ODM leader Raila Odinga to conduct political campaigns.

A week ago, Raila Odinga and Junet Mohammed toured the western region where they launched their 2022 presidential campaign slogan, Azimio La Umoja (quest for unity).

It is understood that their tour to Kakamega last week was the third to witness the launching of the rallying call which the party said is a platform for consultations with Kenyans to address problems afflicting them.
