ODM rebel governor makes about-turn, supports Raila presidency

by Nderi Caren

ODM rebel Governor Amason Kingi has changed his tune on opposing Raila Odinga’s Presidency in 2022.

Amason Kingi, who ditched ODM months ago after being ousted from the county’s chairman position has now promised to use his resources to campaign for Raila.

After the fallout with Raila Odinga, Amason Kingi formed his own party, Pamoja African Alliance(PAA) which has already gained stability at the coast.

Now, the ODM rebel governor has said that PAA will field a candidate in all the elective positions in 2022 except that of the presidency.

“PAA will not field a presidential candidate in 2002 but will back Raila Odinga,” Kingi said at a rally in Kilifi on Saturday, December 11.

His declaration comes after he attended the National Azimio la Umoja function, where Raila Odinga declared that he will contest for the presidential seat for the fifth time.

“Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) believes in the unity of this country irrespective of religion, tribe and/or political affiliation.

Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) will champion and/or support any effort being made to achieve this objective including the Azimio La Umoja initiative,” read a statement from Amason Kingi on Friday, December 10.

This change of tune from the Kilifi Governor comes after his bitter fallout with Raila Odinga, leading to his ouster as the Kilifi ODM chairman in August.

While announcing Kingi’s removal, Raila Odinga accused the ODM rebel governor of betraying him.

“Kingi is not the first (politician) to run away from the ODM, neither is he the first person to betray me. I’m used to being backstabbed. Kingi has no solutions to the problems facing the Coastal people. I’m thinking power has gone into his head,” Raila said.

He then unveiled Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire as the new ODM chairman for Kilifi County.
