ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna makes about-turn, to vie in Nairobi

by Enock Ndayala

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has made an about-turn regarding his 2022 political ambitions saying he will be contesting for the Nairobi Senate seat.

In a statement posted on his social media pages on Thursday, December 16, Sifuna said he will be seeking to succeed Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja who has declared interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

“I will be vying for the Nairobi County Senatorial seat in the 2022 General Election on an ODM ticket,” Sifuna said in a Tweet seen by Kivumbi.co.ke.

He made an unsuccessful run for the same seat in 2017 on the ODM ticket losing to Jubilee’s Johnson Sakaja who replaced Mike Sonko.

Sonmko had successfully opted to contest for the gubernatorial seat in the same election, winning by a landslide against incumbent Evans Kidero.

Sifiuna’s change of tune comes barely days after he declared that he will not be contesting for any electoral seat in the 2022 General Election.

Speaking in Bungoma on Monday, December 13, Sifuna said he has pulled out of the oncoming elections to focus on making his boss Raila Odinga a president.

“I won’t go for any elective seat in this country, I want to redirect my energy to ensure my party boss Raila Odinga wins the presidency in 2022,” Edwin Sifuna said.

An opinion poll released by Mizani Africa in October named the Chungwa house spokesperson the most preferred candidate for the Nairobi Senatorial seat ahead of the 2022 General Election.

According to the survey, Sifuna emerged as the most preferred candidate scooping 50.6 percent of the total number of people interviewed across the county.

The opinion survey dubbed, ‘Nairobi County poll’ was conducted between Friday, October 1, and Wednesday, October 13 2021.

Sifuna is expected to battle it out with Samidoh’s baby mama Karen Nyamu of UDA, Julie Kabogo, and Fredrick Otieno among others.
