Official, President Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza Alliance has majority in National Assembly

by Enock Ndayala
Kenya’s President William Ruto has fired salvos at those critiquing his new tax measures.

President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance is the parliament’s majority, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has ruled.

In a ruling delivered on Thursday, October 6, the National Assembly Speaker said the ruling was made in accordance with the previous ruling on related matters.

Wetang’ula revealed that documents tabled by the Registrar of political parties (RPP) showed that Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap Party (MCCP) and Amason Kingi’s Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), UDM, and MDG parties had ditched Raila’s Azimio for William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza.

“With the 14 members, the membership of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition stands at 179 members while the membership of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party stands at 157 members,

“This by implication indicates that the Kenya Kwanza Coalition is the majority party,” Wetang’ula said.

Wetangula said the coalition agreements signed by several parties are null and void because they had been disowned by the same parties.

“In my understanding of sections 2 and 10 of the political parties Act- parliament permitted a coalition political party to elect to assume the character of party or caption,” he said.

The FORD Kenya party leader further explained that Raila’s Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party had no elected member under its banner.

“If it were to be considered as a political party, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has no elected member in this house today, it has no elected member under its banner,” he said.

Wetang’uula said that the Constitution requires that the leader of the majority party must lead either a party or a coalition of parties in the National Assembly.

“It is without a doubt that if it were to be considered as a political party, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has no elected member in this house today as no member was elected under its banner,” the Speaker clarified.
