Migori Governor Okoth Obado to face Ruto in 2022 elections

by Nderi Caren

Migori Governor Okoth Obado has declared that he will be contesting the Presidential seat in the 2022 General Election.

Obado, who ditched ODM to revive the People Democratic Party(PDP) will be facing the likes of Deputy President William Ruto who is also set to be on the ballot.

Speaking in an interview on Ramogi FM, Okoth Obado said he ditched Raila Odinga’s ODM to focus on strengthening PDP, being his hope for future ambitions.

“My exit from ODM is not in bad faith. I have taken a short break to strengthen the party that steered me to the governorship. It is the bus that ushered me into active politics and I am back to end the journey that I started,” Said Okoth Obado.

His decision to contest against William Ruto comes after wild talks that he is in talks with him on joining UDA Party. This was after he held a meeting with Ruto’s brother, David, on June 9.

Okoth Obado denied the allegations, saying that PDP is preparing to field candidates in all elective posts come 2022.

“There is no link between PDP and Ruto’s UDA. In fact, the party was coined recently after we had formed PDP…We have always been isolated in one cocoon and any attempt to break the barrier is met with reprisals. Let them not politicise this issue of PDP, we are not at war with any party, we are only advocating for our agenda,” he argued.

The Migori County boss fell out with Raila Odinga’s ODM after accusing them of being the cause of the corruption charges that are facing him and his children.

Since then, Okoth Obado has been keen on building his popularity in the Nyanza region.

This, he says does not mean that he wants to divide the Luo Community.

“PDP is not meant to divide the Luo community as alleged by some people. It is a party with a national outlook and I will be using it to vie for the presidency. Having many parties is not a crime, let us unite and strengthen it.”
