The governor had been accused of squandering Wajir’s COVID-19 funds, putting the residents’ health at risk.

“A total of KSh2.92 billion was allocated towards improvement of the current health care system…. despite these colossal amounts…. Under the keen eye of the governor, the health system fell into disrepute, disrepair and failed as a whole,” MCA Hussein Abdirahman Dahir testified in the Senate.

“The committee further found that the allegations meet the threshold for the impeachment of the governor under Article 181 of the Constitution,” read a report from Senate.

Other than the embezzlement of funds, he was also on the chopping board for letting his wife run affairs of the county through the First Lady’s office.

As stipulated in the Constitution, Wajir’s deputy governor Ahmed Ali Muktar was sworn by the County assembly to assume the top office barely hours after Senate voted to impeach his boss.

Justice Said Chitembwe administered the oath of office to Muktar on May 18.

However, governor Abdi had moved to court to stop the swearing-in of his deputy. The court gave orders stopping his replacement and it remains to be seen how the events shall play out.
