Oparanya: It will be hard for Mudavadi, Wetangula to deliver 70% of Luhya votes to Ruto

by Amos Khaemba

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has dismissed the possibility of Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula delivering 70 % of Luhya votes to the Kenya Kwanza alliance flag bearer William Ruto in the forthcoming August General Election.

Through his Facebook page on Monday, May 23, Oparanya said the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party has put in place strategies to ensure Raila gets the majority of the Luhya votes.

“As Azimio presidential campaign Committee chairman for Western and Nyanza regions, I have put in place strategies that will see the Coalition win majority of elective seats and vote overwhelmingly for the Raila-Karua presidency.

“It will be a tall order for our rivals from Kenya Kwanza from the region to deliver the 70 percent mandatory votes,” Oparanya said on Facebook.

Oparanya further revealed that they will be using the upcoming Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party flag bearers’ upcoming tour of Western to prove to their opponents that the Luhya voting block is locked.

“All is set for the “Baba na Martha” campaign tour of Western starting this Wednesday. We want to prove to our political detractors that Western is locked under Baba” Oparanya started.

Earlier on, the Amani National Congress leader, viwed to deliver 90% of the Mulembe votes to the Kenya Kwanza alliance flag bearer William Ruto.

“Mimi na Wetangula tuko hapa, Ingo imeshona. 70 percent ni Kidogo, tutaleta 90 percent,( I and Wetangula are here, we have consolidated Western Kenya. 70 percent is way less, we will bring 90 percent)” Mudavadi said in Limuru on Monday, May 23.

But as the battle of Western votes intensifies it is worth noting that only the late Mwai Kibaki has ever managed to garner more than 70% of Western votes when he got 78.5 % during the 2002 presidential elections.

In 2007 even with the support of Musalia Mudavadi, the Raila Odinga vying under ODM garners 69.2 % of the Luhya votes.

In 2013, Raila Odinga under the banner of the CORD coalition with the support of the Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula got 62.18% votes.

In the 2017 elections, together with Mudavadi and Wetangu’la under the NASA coalition, Raila still did not manage above 70 % of the Mulembe votes.
