An opinion poll released on Friday, December 17, has predicted that Homa Bay County could have the first female governor if elections were held now.

The poll released by Mizani Africa revealed that Homa Bay Woman Rep Gladys Wanga would beat all other gubernatorial candidates to become the first female governor.

According to the poll, Wanga leads other gubernatorial candidates by 42.1 percent public approval rating, followed closely by former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero with 30.3 percent and former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwangawith 12.7 percent.

Mizani Africa data analyst John Benson said that majority of the people interviewed between November 7th and 14th December expressed confidence in Wanga saying she has been keen on championing the interests of the county.

“We did a lot of interviews and the reality is that most people have confidence in Wanga. They see her as a brave woman,” he said.

Earlier this week, a group of Luo elders endorsed Gladys Wanga to vie for the governorship in next year’s General Election.

Luo Council of Elders Kochia Ward Chairman Odul Kabaraka, who led the ceremony held at Ligisa Secondary School in Rangwe Constituency, said Wanga was the best person to lead the county.

“Let our people know elders see things differently. We are offering this county the best candidate for the position of governor in Gladys Wanga,” Kabarak said.

Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti is expected to hang his boots after being at the helm of the county for two terms as he will not be seeking to defend his seat.

The seat has since attracted political bigwigs including former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, ODM National Chairman John Mbadi, and former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwangawith.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will have to make a tough choice since the three frontrunners in the Homa Bay gubernatorial race are all ODM members.
