Outgoing Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua had sent the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition to the drawing board by demanding to be named Raila Odinga’s presidential running mate in the upcoming August General Election.

Addressing media after The Maendeleo Chap Chap National Governing Council meeting on Sunday April 10, Mutua said he will be representing his name to the Azimio coaltion  for consideration as the Raila’s number two.

“With the urging of my party members, I present myself for consideration for the position of deputy president to Jakom Raila Odinga,” Mutua said.

“With the urging of my party members, I present myself for consideration for the position of deputy president to Jakom Raila Odinga,” Mutua said.

Move by Mutua to show interest in the running mate position, complicates matter for the ODM leader even as reports indicate that the Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has insisted that the seat be reserved for him.

Also Mt Kenya region has laid claim to the seat which will greatly shape the August polls depending on who Raila names as his running mate.

The Machakos governor pointed out that the running mate slot is not a reserve of a few people within the Azimio team.

Mutua further revealed that his party had resolved to continue supporting the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition presidential candidate in the coming August polls.

“We have unanimously agreed to support the presidency of  Raila Odinga and the Azimio umbrella. Truth be told, it is his time. Just like it was Nelson Mandela’s time on May 10th, 1994,  this August 9, 2022 elections is Raila’s time,” he said.

Mutua’s statement come after speculations that he was headed to Kenya Kwanza alliance because of the fallout within the newly registered Azimio coalition.

But after the NGC meeting, Mutua said his party is satisfied with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition agreement that was deposited at the Registrar of Parties.

“I wish to confirm that I have at last seen the document that was placed at the Registrar of parties. I have read it and presented it to my team and we are satisfied,” Mutua said.
