Outgoing Murang’a governor offers to bribe IEBC officials to be cleared for presidential race

by Enock Ndayala

Murang’a governor Mwangi Wa Iria said he was ready to bribe Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials if at all that would help him be cleared to vie for the country’s top seat.

On Monday, May 30, IEBC blocked Wa Iria’s application saying he had failed to meet the signatures threshold for clearance as a presidential candidate.

But the Usawa Kwa Wote presidential hopeful who was speaking at the IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi on Tuesday, May 31, accused the commission’s chairperson Wafula Chebukati of deliberately failing to meet him yet he was meeting with other presidential hopefuls.

“He (Wafula Chebukati) has been meeting all the other candidates but when it comes to Wa Iria he is not available. I am also a candidate and I demand to see my Returning Officer (Wafula Chebukati)

“Kama ni kitu kidogo anataka aseme. Najua ni vibaya lakini sasa tukifikishana hapo… Mpigie simu umuambie kuna mtu anamtafuta Kenya hii (If it’s something small (bribe) he wants, let him say… I know it is wrong but now that we seem not to be agreeing… Call him and tell him someone is looking for him),” a furious Wa Iria stated.

Wa Iria made the sentiments after his second attempt to have an audience with IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati to deliberate on his exclusion from the presidential race failed.

The Murang’a Governor who was accompanied by supporters with chants of ‘no Wa Iria no elections’ was to meet Chebukati today Tuesday, May 31, but the agency said that the meeting had been postponed and that “a new hearing day will be communicated at a later date.”

The outgoing Mt Kenya governor however alleged that there was a scheme to lock him out of the August 2022, presidential election.

“If I will not be on the ballot I will not go back home, I am going to lead a redemption. I will immediately start a resistance movement,” Murang’a governor said.
