Pandora papers: Ruto ally says President Uhuru family’s secret wealth is immoral

Deputy President William Ruto ally Gladys Boss Shollei has taken a swipe at President Uhuru over revelations his family has vast secret wealth hidden outside Kenya.

Speaking during a debate on Citizen TV, Shollei explained that it is not right for president Uhuru’s family to have billions of shillings hidden in other countries yet Kenya is languishing in debt.

She argued that President Uhuru Kenyatta should repatriate the billions back into the country so as it circulates and improves the economy.

“Our debt is KSh 9 trillion, it is money that can pay off our debt and there still will be some pocket change left,

“It may be legal but it is immoral… you cannot be leading a country that is suffering economically when you yourself are taking your wealth out of the country especially when a lot of the wealth was made within this country,” Shollei argued.

Ruto ally further argued that the Pandora Papers expose should be taken seriously. She called on parliament to be recalled to discuss the issue on President Uhuru family’s secret.

Her sentiments comes after President Uhuru welcomed the report on the Pandora Papers.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 4, Uhuru said investigations into his family’s secret wealth will enhance financial transparency.

“That these reports will go a long way in enhancing the financial transparency and openness that we require in Kenya and around the globe. The movement of illicit funds, proceeds of crime and corruption thrive in an environment of secrecy and darkness,” read part of a statement from Uhuru.

The Pandora papers revealed that President Uhuru’s family has secret wealth in overseas accounts.

The investigation published in international investigative media companies showed that Uhuru’s family owns offshore investments, including a company with stocks and bonds worth Ksh 3 Billion.

The companies that are in Panama are under the names of Uhuru’s mum (Mama Ngina Kenyatta), brother(Muhoho Kenyatta), and his sisters Christina Pratt and Anne Nyokabi.
