Kenya’s President William Ruto on Thursday, December 15, addressed delegates at the United States-Africa 2022 summit.

The Head of State told world leaders that he has assigned his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta to restore peace in the East Africa region.

He said Uhuru was representing him in the ongoing peace initiative in the Democratic Republic of Congo despite opposing his 2022 state house bid.

“Although he did not support me, my predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta is representing me in the East Africa Community (EAC) at the talks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Ethiopia. That is the kind of democracy we are developing,” President Ruto said.

During the campaigns for the hotly contested presidential elections held on Tuesday, August 9, then-President Uhuru Kenyatta publicly opposed William Ruto’s presidential bid.

The former Head of State instead endorsed William Ruto’s fierce opponent and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga saying the country would be safe in Raila’s hands.

“Haven’t we experienced peace after we come together with Raila Odinga? Haven’t we experienced development after the peace? Do you want the work to go on? Do you want that work to go on? The choice is yours. Will you make the right decision (in the 2022 General Election)? Will you make the right choice?”Uhuru posed in a direct reference to Raila Odinga amid cheers from the crowd in Kibra, Nairobi.

But according to the official results announced by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, William Ruto defeated Raila.

But speaking during his inauguration on Tuesday, September 13, William Ruto asked Rtd. President Uhuru Kenyatta to lead peace initiative in the region.

“On the peace initiatives in our region including both in Ethiopia and Great Lakes Region, I have asked my elder brother President Uhuru Kenyatta who has done commendable engagement with those regions and he has graciously agreed to continue chairing those discussions on behalf of the people of Kenya,” Ruto said.
