The Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA) on Tuesday, October 25, published a list of 225 names that are yet to claim their financial assets worth billions of shillings.

The Authority in a report by the Standard said that most of the unclaimed assets belonged to members of prominent families.

Among those listed were the families of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and of self-made billionaire and former Cabinet Minister Njenga Karume.

As such, the Head of Corporate Communications Paul Muya urged the families including that of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party presidential candidate Raila Odinga to collect millions left behind by his son, the late Fidel Odinga.

“We are asking the families and beneficiaries to come forward for the unclaimed money, which is substantial,” Muya said.

The authority says the individuals are supposed to present their personal details to UFAA offices to be allowed to access the assets that are registered under their names.

In one of his latest media interviews, UFAA chief executive officer, John Mwangi, disclosed that the state was in possession of unclaimed wealth totaling nearly KSh 55 billion.

The property was in the form of unpaid insurance policies, mobile money in wallet accounts, unpaid pension remittances, money in bank accounts, Saccos, and legal reparations.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Equity Absa, Co-operative, Eco Bank, Diamond Trust Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank are among the financial institutions holding billions of unclaimed assets.

The authority further said billions of shillings in shares of various companies like Safaricom, East African Breweries Limited, Kengen, TPS Eastern Africa Limited, Britam, Centum British American Tobacco, and the Housing Finance Company are yet to be connected with the owners.

Fidel Castro Odinga was in January 2015 found dead in his home near Nairobi aged 42 years.
