President Uhuru endorses Raila Odinga for president at Sagana

by Amos Khaemba

President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially endorsed the ODM leader Raila Odinga for the presidency in the forthcoming August 9 presidential election.

Speaking at Sagana State Lodge, on Wednesday, February 23 when he hosted thousands of Mt Kenya residents, President Uhuru affirmed that the ODM leader stands a better chance of steering the nation in the right direction.

“An old man on a stool sees further than a boy on a tree. Let me stick with the old man (Raila) who I can talk to.” President Uhuru said.

While endorsing the former prime minister, President Uhuru in an apparent reference to Deputy President William Ruto, said he has no problem supporting in future if he reforms.

“Please let us support the old man until he wins and if the other comes back, I will support him. I do not have a problem with anyone.” Uhuru said.

In his address President Uhuru revised his previous battles with Raila Odinga, saying he realized later that insults in political contests have no value.

“I used to insult, Raila Odinga, I will not lie but when I am wrong I apologies,” the head of state said.

At the same time, President Uhuru reiterated his earlier sentiments that he informed DP Ruto about the handshake, adding it was wrong for the second in command to claim he wasn’t aware.

“Yes I called him(Raila) ‘kimundu’ but I asked for forgiveness…William Ruto was aware of our handshake and I told him explicitly that I will shake hands with Raila. I know I had a promise to Ruto but I got to the point where the main thing was peace. that’s what I sought.” President Uhuru said.

This is the first time President Uhuru is publicly rallying the Mt Kenya region to vote for Raila Odinga since the March 2018 handshake.
