President Uhuru Kenyatta has praised the nationwide curfew that has been in place since March 2018 as part of the Covid-19 containment measures.
According to the Head of State, the dusk to dawn curfew has helped in increasing the population in parts of Kenya.
Speaking on Saturday, October 16, during Kenya Defence Forces day, President Uhuru said that the nationwide curfew should continue because it has resulted in the birth of many children.
“According to what I have seen here at Kahawa today, the nationwide curfew should just go on. There are so many children here. Let the curfew go on,” Uhuru said.
His sentiments come after a call from ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi to uplift the curfew that has been in place since March 2020.
Mudavadi asked President Uhuru to lift the curfew so as to allow the growth of Kenya’s economy.
He said that citizens will continue observing other COVID-19 safety measures to reduce the spread
“I call upon President Uhuru Kenyatta to lift the curfew that is aggravating the economic hardships faced by Kenyans under Covid-19. The prevalence rate has gone down. Kenyans should, however, continue observing Ministry of Health safety protocols,” Mudavadi wrote in a tweet.
There have been numerous calls from other leaders such as Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen to uplift the nationwide curfew.
Murkomen argued that there are a few leaders benefitting from the curfew at the expense of citizens.
“The people who are suffering are more than the people benefiting from the curfew. We are urging President Uhuru Kenyatta to stop the hypocrisy,” Murkomen said.
Last week, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna implored Raila Odinga to intervene and bring an end to the curfew.
“Young people want the cost of flour to be reduced to Ksh50… Baba young people have said because life is short they want to have a good time but the curfew has restricted them very much and they want it to be removed,” Sifuna said.
