President Uhuru Kenyatta has embarked on a mission to remove Deputy President William Ruto’s allies from his cabinet.
On Tuesday, August 10, the Head of State held a meeting with Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka(Wiper) Musalia Mudavadi(ANC) Gideon Moi(KANU), Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya), and Wycliffe Oparanya(ODM) where the cabinet changes are believed to have been discussed.
Kivumbi.co.ke understands insiders in the meeting told a local publication that the President intends to replace William Ruto’s sympathizers in cabinet with loyalists from the opposition.
According to the insiders, Uhuru plans to weed out Ruto allies in the cabinet for failing to help him safeguard his legacy.
Therefore, Raila Odinga and the four One Kenya Alliance (OKA) principals were asked to submit names of candidates who can take up the cabinet slots.
Other than cementing his loyalty, the President’s plans to weed out Ruto’s allies in the cabinet was also aggravated by the latest saga on the DP’s failed trip to Uganda.
“The President was very mad with the DP following his discussions with a so-called foreign investor with questionable credentials and will no longer continue serving with people exhibiting divided loyalty,” the Daily Nation quoted the source.
The Deputy President is on the record saying he has supporters in the cabinet, who are only waiting for the opportune time to reveal their political alignment.
He said that they fear associating with him publicly for it will lead to victimization.
Another agenda of the meeting was to unite Raila Odinga and the OKA principals, in order to have a formidable coalition to take on DP William Ruto in 2022.
In the meeting, President Uhuru Kenyatta is said to have urged the OKA principals to shelve their 2022 presidential ambitions and support Raila Odinga.
However, the OKA members were not pleased with the suggestion, demanding that Raila only joins them on equal grounds, and compete for the slot fairly.
