Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s popularity in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region has been on an upward trajectory as the August 9, elections fast approach.

Analysts opine that Raila’s popularity in the region started rising immediately after he picked Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua as his 2022 presidential running mate.

Furthermore, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s endorsement of his handshake partner is believed to have further raised Raila’s stake in Kenya’s huge voting bloc which for the first time since independence will not be fielding a serious presidential candidate.

But in an interview with NTV on Monday, July 4, President Uhuru’s cousin Kung’u Muigai said that though the Mt Kenya residents love the Head of State, they will not follow his political direction.

Muigai, who serves as the patron of the National Council of Elders argued that Mt Kenya locals love Deputy President William Ruto so much since he propelled their son to victory in the 2013 and 2017 elections.

“When people saw (president) Uhuru joining hands with (William) Ruto, they were excited and had him in their hearts. Ruto is in their hearts,

“Uhuru is very much loved to date in Mt Kenya. However, people have refused the direction he wants the region to take,” Uhuru’s cousin said.

The remarks by Muigai come just days after he led a delegation of Kikuyu elders to 2022 presidential front runner William Ruto’s residence, where the second in command alleged that he almost slapped his boss on the day their 2017 presidential win was nullified by the Supreme Court.

It is during this meeting that the UDA presidential flag bearer admitted that he pushed President Uhuru Kenyatta who had given up on participating in the repeat presidential election which was boycotted by the main challenger, Raila Odinga.
