President Uhuru’s family has been linked to 13 secret offshore companies under the biggest leak in history.
The investigation published in international investigative media companies shows that President Uhuru’s family owns offshore investments, including a company with stocks and bonds worth Ksh 3 Billion.
Documents from 14 law firms and service providers in Panama and other tax havens show that a foundation called Varies was set up in 2003 in Panama.
The documents named President Uhuru Kenyatta’s mother, Ngina as the first benefactor.
President Uhuru was named as the second benefactor, who would inherit it after the death of his mother Ngina.
In paperwork seen by the BBC, the Pandora Papers reveal that in 1999, Ngina Kenyatta and her two daughters, Kristina and Anna, set up an offshore company – Milrun Internatinal Limited – which was incorporated in the BVI.
Uhuru’s mother, Ngina Kenyatta and her daughters were advised by experienced international wealth experts from the Swiss bank Union Bancaire Privée (UBP).
The bank recruited Alcogal, a Panamanian law firm specialising in setting up and administering offshore companies.
Under the code “client 13173” President Uhuru’s family opened anonymous companies that can not be easily traced back to them.
In 2003, the swiss bank also helped President Uhuru’s brother Muhoho Kenyatta Muhoho, to set up a Panamanian entity called Criselle Foundation.
Muhoho Kenyatta registered his son Jomo Kamau Muhoho, as successor.
The investigation found that most of the companies linked to the Kenyatta’s are now dormant, some of them as a result of non-payment of regulatory fees.
However, such accounts have also been linked to being used for diverting money, avoiding taxes and for money laundering.
In Kenya, there have been many questions about the vast wealth acquired by the Kenyattas.
Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua, who was a personal assistant of President Uhuru Kenyatta once threatened to expose the illegal parcels of land owned by the Kenyattas.
This sparked reactions from Jubilee Party leadership, calling on William Ruto to tame his dogs against attacking the first family.
