Presidential hopeful Jimmy Wanjigi to be arrested for possession illegal guns

ODM presidential ticket contender Jimmy Wanjigi could be arrested if he fails to surrender illegal firearms he reportedly owns, detectives have said.

In a letter dated Monday, February 21, the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) said the businessman-turned-politician owns 11 firearms and ammunition that are not registered as required and are used illegally.

“In this regard, the Director of Criminal Investigation has in the past few months conducted extensive investigations and established that you are in possession of firearms and ammunition that are dimmed to be illegally acquired,” DCI said in a statement seen by Kivumbi.co.ke

The presidential hopeful now has 72 hours to surrender the 11 firearms failure to which he will be arrested and presented for prosecution.

“You are therefore required to surrender the under-listed Firearms and Ammunitions to the undersigned at the DCI Headquarters  Mazingira Complex, Kiambu Road within 72 hours from the date and time of delivery of this summons.

Some of the firearms illegally acquired and owned include 485 bullets which were found within the compound of Kwacha Group of Companies, a company belonging to Jimmy Wanjigi.

According to DCI, the illegal holding of firearms by Wanjigi who is eying to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta ahead of the August 9, General Election possess a great risk to the lives of innocent Kenyans and his opponents.

“The illegal holding of firearms and such massive amount of ammunition particularly at this time of heightened political activity could be used to commit a myriad of offenses including but not limited to maiming and or killing of innocent persons or opponents,” the letter added.

Wanjigi is further accused of failing to appear before the Firearm Licensing Board for vetting.
