Pressure mounts for William Ruto to resign as deputy president

by Enock Ndayala

Alego Usoga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi has challenged Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto to resign from his position.

According to the lawmaker, the recent moves by president Uhuru Kenyatta to delegate some of the roles of the DP to opposition leader Raila Odinga and Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is a clear indicator that Ruto is not wanted in government.

In his latest media interview, the ODM legislator challenged Ruto to follow in the footsteps of Jaramogi Oginga Oding’a footsteps and resign.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga stepped down from his position as Kenya’s first vice president in 1966 under Kenya’s first president Jomo Kenyatta after the two fell out.

“The DP has refused to leave government …he should do what Jaramogi Oginga did when he decided to leave government,” Atandi said.

Atandi further argued that Ruto should start implementing his much-touted bottoms-up approach now when he is government instead of waiting until after 2022.

“He is forgetting he has this thing called bottom-up approach that he claims will take effect after 2022,

“He should actually be infusing these ideas in government,” Atandi said.

This comes barely a month after the deputy president publicly confirmed that he has been humiliated under the jubilee government especially after the 2017 General Election.

In an interview with citizen tv mid last month, Ruto confirmed that he has been humiliated, adding that he won’t allow a deputy president to be humiliated the way he has been humiliated should he become the fifth President of Kenya.

Atandi joins the long list of other leaders who have been pushing for Ruto’s resignation.

It comes barely days after Narc Kenya party leaders Martha Karua challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy to resign and pave way for a by-election if they could not iron out their political differences.

“This is completely unconstitutional. The president has joined a bandwagon …It is a bad example. They can both resign and pave way for by-election because they were elected as unit hence must work as a unit,’’ Karua said.

Jubilee vice-chair David Murathe has on several occasions urged Ruto to resign.
