Last year, ODM leader Raila Odinga ruled out retiring from active politics even after losing the presidency to William Ruto.
The 77-year-old who was addressing mourners at the burial of his wife’s bodyguard in Siaya County urged his supporters to desist from speaking on his retirement.
Raila said that he still got a lot to do for Kenyans as regards the state of democracy in the country.
“When my time to retire from politics comes, I will peacefully exit the stage. There shouldn’t be any discussion about that. Our focus now should be reforming the politics of this country so that democracy may thrive,” Raila said.
However, on Sunday, January 29, the former Prime Minister opened up on his political future, including his possible successors when he exits the stage.
“It is not a question of age. I am very strong and I can continue, but I am ready to hand over to others when the time comes,” Raila said in an interview with Nation.
The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party presidential candidate hinted at endorsing Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
While terming Kalonzo Musyoka an astute and principled politician, Raila said he has worked with him and that he was his loyalist.
“I have people I’m working with who have been very loyal and steadfast like Kalonzo Musyoka,” Raila added.
Raila however did not reveal when he will exit the stage stating that he cannot exit when the situation is still looking gloomy.
“I am not retiring as yet by demand of the people, and I cannot abandon the cause when the situation is looking so gloomy,” he said.
