Raila, Kalonzo disagree barely days after signing pre-election deal

by Enock Ndayala
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced his intentions to vie for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

ODM leader Raila Odinga and his Wiper Counterpart Kalozo Musyoka are reading from different scripts days after their colorful pre-election deal presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kivumbi.co.ke has learned that the former vice president is insisting that he joined Azimio as One Kenya Alliance (OKA) and not as a Wiper party and that they agreed on Azimio-One Kenya.

“The name of the grand coalition is Azimio-One Kenya, which will be registered as a coalition party,” Kalonzo said.

However, opposition Chief Raila Odinga’s team maintains that the 24 political parties that appended their signatures did so to join Azimio la Umoja coalition party.

On Monday, March 14, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaign spokesperson Makau Mutua argued that there was no way they could ink a coalition-to-coalition deal as the new political parties law does not allow for such arrangement.

“An agreement was signed by secretary generals of the constituent political parties to join Azimio as a coalition party. The 24 political parties signed as single parties,” Mutua said.

Azimio board chair Nderitu Muriithi further argued that a political party cannot be a member of two coalitions stating that Wiper cannot belong to both OKA and Azimio la Umoja coalition.

“According to the law, one political party cannot be a member of two coalitions; that is why on Saturday the Secretary Generals of the parties signed for their individual parties,” Ndiritu said.

The development contradicts the Wiper leader who lifted the lid on the unfinished business in his August 9 election pre-election deal with Raila Odinga.

In an interview with KTN News on Monday, March 14, Kalonzo claimed he was not aware of what the 24 parties coalescing under Azimio la Umoja signed.

He said the whole process was rushed and that the agreement did not factor in his proposal for the outfit to be called Azimio-One Kenya.
