Azimio presidential aspirant Raila Odinga has maintained the lead ahead of William Ruto in the race to become the 5th president.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalitions presidential aspirant Raila Odinga has maintained the lead ahead of Deputy President William Ruto in the race to become the 5th president according to new polls.

According to polls by Statistics Kenya released on Thursday, April 7, Raila would be elected the 5th president if the election were held today, with a popularity of 45 %.

Deputy President William Ruto who is expected to fly the flag of the yet-to-be-registered Kenya Kwanza coalition would emerge second with a popularity rate of 42 %.

“In summary, Raila Odinga has now overtaken William Ruto. He polled at 45% followed by Ruto at 42%. Jimi Wanjigi came third at 1%. Interestingly, 11% of the voters remain undecided,” Statistics Kenya stated.

According to the poll conducted between 16.03.2022 and 30.03.2022, none of the leading presidential candidates will win in the first round.

The constitution requires one to get 50 % plus 1 vote of the total votes cast in an election in order to be declared the winner of a presidential election.

According to the poll results, Raila Odinga’s popularity is attributed to the numerous endorsements from different political parties now in the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition and their leaders not fielding any other presidential candidate.

“Most supporters indicated that part of their decision was former vice-president Kalonzo Musyoka publicly shelving his presidential pursuit, and also Martha Karua joining the Azimio movement with both vowing to fully support Raila Odinga’s presidential candidature” Statistics Kenya noted.

In terms of regions, the former prime minister is the most popular candidate in Nyanza, Western, Coast, Nairobi, North Eastern, and Eastern.

On the other hand, DP Ruto has maintained crip on the popular voting blocs of Rift Valley and Central Kenya.

Since the ODM leader declared his candidature, this is the second time that he has emerged as the favorite in the State House race.

In the month of March, Radio Africa Group monthly polls showed that the ODM leader has overtaken DP Ruto as the most preferred presidential candidate among Kenyans.

According to the poll, 47.4 % of respondents said they would vote for Raila as president if elections were held in March, compared to Ruto’s 43.4 %.
