Raila Odinga 2022 plan as well as that of his party, ODM, will no doubt be taken back to the drawing board as the bid to join forces with other parties so as to increase the chances of clinching the presidency in 2022 appears to have run into headwinds.
This is because all the political leaders that ODM counted on to enter into a partnership with Raila slammed the brakes on any form of partnership talks.
Raila Odinga 2022 plan was hinged on either reviving the NASA coalition that he used in the 2017 General Election or forming a coalition with Jubilee Party.
Coalition plans between Jubilee and ODM had gained momentum when suddenly the ruling party opted to suspend the same so as to focus on internal rebuilding.
After consequent losses in Bonchari, Juja, and Kiambaa constituency by-elections, Jubilee realized that there are weaknesses within their party which need to be resolved before joining forces with ODM.
In a meeting held at its Pangani Headquarters on July 19, Jubilee’s National Management Committee (NMC) resolved to put their house in order before committing themselves to a coalition with ODM.
“We agreed that at least for now, we should drop the idea of the merger and instead focus on revamping the party for the next four months,
The merger idea is on the table but not for now. Let it come at a later date when we have finished rejuvenating our party and made it a formidable force,” Jubilee deputy Secretary-general Joshua Kutuny told the star newspaper.
On the other hand, Raila’s partners in the NASA coalition (Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Moses Wetangula) held a meeting on July 20.
In their lengthy discussions, all but Moses Wetangula agreed to abort NASA ties and focus on a coalition with Gideon Moi under the One Kenya Alliance (OKA).
Since time immemorial, the trio has accused Raila Odinga of betrayal and dishonesty and vowed not to work with him again.
In their latest meeting, they gave conditions that if Raila renews coalition talks with them, he should get in on a fairground.
This means that he is not guaranteed the presidential ticket.
The flip-flopping coalition talks with NASA and Jubilee have no doubt complicated Raila Odinga 2022 plan where he needs to martial enough support considering this is his last realistic chance to vie for the presidency.
