There was a slight scuffle at the Nyayo Stadium after ODM leader Raila Odinga’s bodyguards were roughed up by military security at late President Mwai Kibaki’s requiem mass.

The bodyguards of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya presidential candidate were blocked from accessing the VIP holding area which was highly manned by the military and elite forces.

Raila had arrived at the stadium alongside his wife Ida Odinga who had gone to Nyayo for the State Funeral service of Kenya’s third President Mwai Kibaki on Friday, April 29.

Immediately the couple alighted from their vehicle, they went straight to the VIP holding area, with their bodyguards in tow.

However, upon reaching the Nyayo Stadium’s VIP, the men in suits at the entrance who are believed to be part of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s security detail blocked one of Raila’s bodyguards who sought to follow his boss to the lounge.

In a clip doing rounds on social media, the military who are reported to have been directed to only allow the VIPs inside, without their security team were heard telling Raila’s bodyguards that his boss is safe inside there.

Raila (Odinga) “is very safe [inside there],” one of the militaries was heard saying.

One of Raila’s bodyguards who had been dressed in a grey suit tried to force himself in but was subdued by the security officers and thrown out.

Protocol dictates that where the President’s security team is, especially in an enclosed space, other VIPs’ security officers must surrender the protection function to the President’s officers.

“We will have a situation where the VIPs will be allowed in and their security will not be accommodated in the same venue. After all, the place is secured by the Presidential Escort,” Principal Administrative Secretary (PAS) at the Office of the President, Kennedy Kihara told The Standard.
