Raila Odinga: I don’t even want to shake DP Gachagua’s hand

by Enock Ndayala
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has torn into Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s outbursts.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Sunday, April 2, temporarily suspended his weekly protests to pave the way for talks with President William Ruto.

This saw a section of political leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza government claim that Raila was after a handshake with President William Ruto in an arrangement similar to that of 2018 with Rtd President Uhuru Kenyatta.

However, in a press briefing on Tuesday, April 4, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader Raila Odinga dismissed claims that he was pushing to be incorporated into the Kenya Kwanza government through the handshake.

Raila indicated that the language of ‘nusu mkate’ was emanating from the other side adding that he will not shake hands with anyone including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

“We have never talked about a handshake. That is a language coming from the other side. I don’t even want to shake Gachagua’s hand,” Raila said.

Raila further assured his supporters and Kenyans that he will not be coerced into an agreement that does not augur well with them.

“We assure our people and Kenyans that our eyes are firmly on the ball and reiterate that we shall go back to the people at the earliest sign of lack of seriousness by the other side,” Raila reiterated.

Similar calls were made by Kenya’s President William Ruto who is in Rwanda for a two-day state visit.

In bilateral talks with his host and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, the president reiterated that he will not agree to a political handshake with Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

“Will there be a handshake? There will be no handshake but there will be an engagement in parliament. Whatever can be resolved will be resolved,” said Ruto while on an official trip to Rwanda.
