Raila Odinga most popular presidential hopeful in Kenya’s two biggest cities

Raila Odinga remains the most popular presidential candidate in the counties of Nairobi and Mombasa ahead of August polls.

According to a recent poll by TIFA research the ODM leader has a popularity rate of 41 % in Nairobi with Deputy President William Ruto emerging second with 26%.

The survey shows that Nairobi remains with a large population of residents who are undecided on their preferred candidate at 32%.

“Whilst Raila Odinga is the most popular presidential candidate in Nairobi, the gap between him and DP Ruto is small enough to suggest that the level of contestation in this county will be high,” Tifa said.

Based on the survey Raila Odinga has maintained grip on his political stronghold of Mombasa County where 50 % of residents would vote for the ODM leader if elections were held today.

DP Ruto has a popularity rate of 32% with 18 % of the residents remaining undecided on who they will vote for as their president in the forthcoming August elections. the highest support followed by William Ruto.

In terms of political coalitions’ popularity, Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition has a support base of 42% in Nairobi while in Mombasa it has 41%.

Kenya Kwanza alliance led by DP Ruto is the second-best political formation in Nairobi and Mombasa at 22 % and 27 % respectively.
“According to the survey, The ODM party is the most popular party followed by UDA. Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has the highest support in Nairobi.” Tifa Research said in their findings.

The survey which was carried out in April through telephonic interviews has a margin error of +/- 4.

A similar poll by Radio Africa Group done last month had also placed Raila ahead of Ruto in Nairobi and Mombasa counties.

According to the Radio Africa Polls, Raila was leading in the key battleground of Coast with 46.1 percent compared to Ruto’s 38.8 percent.

Nairobi County boasts of more than 2,200,000 registered voters while Mombasa Couty has more than 600,000 voters.
