Raila Odinga planning to reject presidential election results-Alfred Mutua

by Enock Ndayala
Governor Alfred Mutua wants to be named Raila Odinga’s presidential running mate in the upcoming August 9 General Election.

On Monday, July 11, a new survey placed Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition party presidential candidate Raila Odinga ahead of Deputy President William Ruto.

The survey conducted by Trends and Insights Africa (TIFA) established that Raila Odinga enjoys national support of 42 percent compared to William Ruto’s 39 percent.

According to the survey, the cut-throat competition for the top seat might fail to produce an outright winner hence forcing a run-off.

Commenting on the survey, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua dismissed the survey placing Raila ahead of the 2022 presidential front runner William Ruto.

In a statement, posted on his Facebook on Monday, July 11, Mutua said the opinion polls were doctored to give the former Prime Minister a reason to reject the presidential results.

“I am a believer of opinion polling. However, what we are witnessing is a campaign to create a perception that Raila Odinga is ahead so as to soften the ground to allow for rejection of the elections by Azimio and to force the formation of a coalition Government. Similar script to that used against President Mwai Kibaki,” Alfred Mutua said.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader further stated that data from Kenya Kwanza Alliance shows that UDA presidential candidate William Ruto is ahead of Raila by 60 percent.

“I, therefore, find the current opinion polls meant to propel up Raila, not only inaccurate, doctored, laughable but a desperate attempt at swaying the public. It is clear from the way Azimio team members are attacking the IEBC and complaining of the election process that they know they are doing badly,” he said.

The outgoing second-term governor said that Raila has already lost nearly all strongholds of the Western, Ukambani, Coast, and Nairobi regions.

He said the former Eldoret North MP has consolidated the vote-rich Mt Kenya region and the Rift Valley strongholds.
