Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has protested the increase in fuel prices across Kenya.

On Tuesday, September 14, Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announces the increase in fuel prices in the country.

After protests from members of the public, Raila Odinga has called on the regulatory institution to lower the price of fuel.

“Kenyans who have been struggling to put food on the table since the onset of the pandemic now stand to have their collective plight worsened by the increased fuel prices,

The prices should be lowered immediately to cushion the ordinary Wanainchi,” Odinga wrote in a tweet.

Deputy President William Ruto has also protested the increase in fuel prices, warning that it will raise the cost of living in Kenya.

This is mistaken in the middle of the COVId-19 pandemic. We must team up and manage this situation that threatens to go out of hand,” he said.

The DP asked concerned public officers to get to work and offer the right advice to the Government so that the right decisions on people issues are made.

Other than the two, the Central organization of Trade Unions Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has also cautioned the government about the rise in fuel prices.

“The President should, himself, explain to Kenyans why the government is hell-bent on increasing the pain and suffering of Kenyan workers and Kenyans in general amid the Covid-19 pandemic,” Atwoli said in a press statement released on Thursday.

He warned that if President Uhuru does not address the situation, workers in the country must be forced to down their tools.

“Unless their policies place Kenyan workers at the centre then they should prepare for unrest from all quarters,” he said.

EPRA raised the price of super petrol by Ksh.7.58 per litre, while the cost of diesel and kerosene increased by Ksh.7.94 and Ksh.12.97 per litre respectively.
