Raila Odinga uses feared madoadoa word while campaigning in Wajir

by Enock Ndayala

Leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto have sharply criticized ODM leader Raila Odinga for using the dreaded word ‘Madoadoa’.

During an Azimio la Umoja campaign rally in Wajir on Wednesday, March 9, the presidential hopeful was heard urging residents to vote for all Azimio la Umoja candidates vying for all six elective positions, popularly known as the six-piece voting style.

“Hatutaki madoadoa katika kaunti ya Wajir, tunataka viongozi wote wachagulie ndani ya Azimio (We don’t want to see patches in Wajir County, we want all Azimio la Umoja leaders seeking elective seats to be elected uniformly),” Raila said.

This comes barely a month after Meru senator Mithika Linturi, an ardent supporter of William Ruto was arrested for using the same word during a UDA rally in Eldoret.

However, on Monday, February 28, the Nakuru court freed him after the prosecution failed to prefer charges against him over the madoadoa utterances.

Despite the move by the former prime minister to expound on his madoadoa context, allies of the deputy president led by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen took to social media urging the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to immediately arrest Raila as they did to Linturi.

“This is Raila Odinga in Wajir today. To demonstrate rule of law and in particular equality before the law, let DCI and ODPP act as swift as in the case of Mithika Linturi,” Murkomen said in a Tweet.

Soi Member of Parliament Caleb Kositany urged the DCI and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission not to be selective in dealing with hate speech as the country gears towards the August 9, General Election.

“Will Raila Odinga be picked up for this? Mithika Linturi DCI, NCIC, NPS. Of course not,” he said.
