Raila Odinga’s led councils in the 2017 presidential petition against President Uhuru Kenyatta have come out to represent Sabina Chege over her utterances of election theft in previous elections.

While appearing before IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati on Tuesday, February 15over rigging claims, Murang’a Woman rep Sabina Chege was represented by lawyers James Orengo, Otiende Amollo, and Martin Oloo.

During the succession, Orengo and his team questioned the jurisdiction of IEBC over Chege’s vote-rigging remarks.

The lawyers argued that the Chebukati-led commission was overreaching its mandate in trying to summon the vocal lawmaker saying the commission was putting itself on trial by entertaining the case.

“The moment you try to deal with this matter, Chege will not be on trial but this Commission. In these circumstances, don’t bring the Commission into disrepute at this moment.” Orengo said.

On his part, lawyer Martin Oloo said IEBC is misplaced in citing Chege for violating the electoral code of conduct.

“We are not in a campaign period and to say the code is violated is an overreach,” Oloo said.

After heated arguments, the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission retreated and ruled that it has the jurisdiction to hear Murang’a MP Sabina Chege’s vote-rigging claim.

After heated arguments, the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission retreated in order to prepare a ruling on whether the agency has jurisdiction over Murang’a MP Sabina Chege’s vote-rigging claim.

It is worth noting that Sabina Chege’s lawyers are the ones who successfully convinced the Supreme Court that the 2017 presidential elections were full of malpractices.

Sabina Chege was summoned for her utterances made at a public rally in Isibuye in Vihiga County on February 10, 2022, during the Azimio la Umoja Movement mobilization rally.

While urging residents to register in large numbers as voters so that they can vote in ODM leader Raila Odinga to be the fifth President, Chege revealed how Jubilee might have rigged the ODM leader out in the 2017 presidential elections.

“Kule central nimeskia hapawengine wakisema hapa tuliwaibia, kuna kaukweli kidogo. Lakini mjue kama tulijua kuiba si ata hii tutafanya nini…alafu…alafu”. ( In Central, I have heard here some people saying that we stole from them. There is some truth in that. They should know that if we knew how to steal then, why not in this? Will we not do something… then… then…then)
