Raila Odinga’s coalition options after the collapse of NASA

by Nderi Caren

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is considering other coalition options after the collapse of NASA following exits by Kalonzo Muusyoka and Musalia Mudavadi’s parties.

After Kalozo Musyoka(Wiper) and Musalia Mudavadi(ANC) technically opted out of the NASA coalition, Raila Odinga appeared to have been left without strong partners.

It however seems like the ODM leader has other options he can look at in an effort to increase his chances of clinching the presidency in 2022.

Even with the collapse of NASA, Raila Odinga stares at a possibility of a coalition with Maendeleo Chap Chap leader  Alfred Mutua.

During a meeting at SK Macharia’s Ndakaini home on Tuesday, July 27, Raila warned his main competitor Willia Ruto that he is working on a coalition that will make the 2022 presidential elections a tough battle.

First, Jubilee Party is a prospective candidate in Raila Odinga’s hunt for a coalition partner.

Their talks had already kicked off, but the Jubilee Party took a back seat to focus on sorting out internal wrangles following a poor show in by-elections.

According to Jubilee officials, the coalition talks will resume after 5 months. This means Raila still has a likely coalition partner in Jubilee Party.

Also, Raila could get into partnership with KANU Party leader Gideon Moi.

During a meeting between One Kenya Alliance co-principles, it merged Gideon Moi was against the idea of leaving Raila out of their plans.

Gideon Moi and Raila have also been having meetings, raising suspicion the two could be working on a coalition plan.

In addition to the two parties, political analysts say that Raila Odinga still has a chance with Kalonzo Musyoka.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna told the Daily Nation that their split with Wiper does not mean they are permanent enemies.

He believes that their paths may cross once more. Known for his indecisiveness, it won’t be a surprise for Kalonzo to work with Raila Odinga once again.

Raila Odinga also has the possibility of forming a coalition with Maendeleo Chap Chap leader  Alfred Mutua.

On July 27, Mutua accompanied Raila to SK Macharia’s Ndakaini home where he interacted with other ODM leaders.

There is also a possibility of Raila Odinga working with Charity Ngilu’s Narc Party.

Charity Ngilu has been a big supporter of Raila Odinga, calling on Kalonzo Musyoka to also work with the ODM leader so as to stop Ruto in 2022.
