Raila Odinga’s wife apologizes after attacking ‘mushrooming churches’

by Amos Khaemba

Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga’s wife Ida Odinga has apologised for her remark on the need to regulate the ‘mushrooming’ of churches in Kenya.

In a press release, Ida withdrew the comments she made in Kisumu on Saturday, January 29, where she challenged the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) to regulate the rapid growth of churches in the country.

“I wish to this morning withdraw the statement I made to NCCK to regulate the churches under them in order to promote consistency and relevance in messaging for promotion of evangelism in Kenya,” Ida said in the statement seen by Kivumbi.co.ke.

“It has come to my realisation that my comments have not sat well with some members of the church. I sincerely apologise for the discomfort caused as I meant no harm to any person,” Ida said.

The former prime minister’s wife pointed out that her comments of training of preachers were because training makes service of preaching better and promotes the ministration of the word of God.

“I also wish to state that my position on the training of preachers was blown out of context by the media reports circulating online,” she added.

Ida pointed out that she appreciated the work of the church and she remains dedicated in promoting the growth of the church space for a better society in Kenya.

“I have appreciated for a long time and I have sat and listened to many preachers eloquently and diligently deliver life-changing sermons,” said Ida.

Many Kenyans had taken to social media to accuse Ida Odinga of advocating laws that are punitive to the church.
