Raila responds to Kalonzo Musyoka over vetting of presidential running mate

by Amos Khaemba

The ODM leader Raila Odinga dismissed claims that the Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka will be ridiculed if he faces the presidential running mate vetting panel.

Through Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya presidential campaign spokesperson Makau Mutua, the ODM leader Said that vetting is a norm in most democratic nations meant to show transparency.

According to Raila, the vetting process is meant to promote inclusivity and legitimacy in the process of picking a presidential running mate.

“Search committees for suitable running mates have been the standard in established/mature democracies forever. There’s nothing “humiliating” about them. They add transparency, inclusivity, and legitimacy to the process and person(s) recommended.” Mutua tweeted.

Response by Raila comes after the Wiper leader expressed reservation with the formation of a vetting panel saying he sees no need to subject himself to a panel when he is the most qualified person for the position.

In an interview with The Nation recently, Musyoka lamented that the current dilemma was weighing him down and preventing him from hitting the ground to campaign for Odinga.

“This issue of running mate is weighing me down and makes me want to just go home because I ask myself should I be struggling for this?” Musyoka told the Nation in an interview.

The Wiper leader wondered why he is being required to apply for the running mate slot when the ODM leader did not apply to the presidential candidate for the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition.

“If we were to tell each other the truth and everyone in our team knows the right thing to do. I do not understand why anyone would ask me to apply for the position of running mate. Did Raila apply to be the flag bearer?” Kalonzo told KTN News on Thursday, April 28.
