Raila warns time for Kalonzo to join Azimio la Umoja is running out

by Amos Khaemba

The ODM leader Raila Odinga has warned Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka that the time for him to join the Azimio la yet-to-be registered Umoja coalition is fast running out.

Speaking in Murang’a on Monday, March 7, the former prime minister was categorical that no one will be forced to join the coalition he intends to use in vying for the presidency in August 2022.

In an apparent reference to the Wiper leader, Raila said that the Azimio train will only onboard those willing to join and not succumb to preconditions and ultimatums set by other leaders.

“Please don’t tell me about One Kenya Alliance (OKA), I have said we will deal with those who come to us, we will not force anybody or push anybody to come to Azimio,

“Azimio la Umoja is basically a movement for the willing, those who want to come are free to come,” Raila said.

The Azimio National Delegates Convention is slated for Saturday, March 12, and the former prime minister said only parties that are willing to join will be allowed to attend.

“The people who will come to the NDC are those who subscribe to the ideologies of Azimio which is a unity of purpose. This is a coalition of the willing. Nobody is being coerced to join Azimio,” said Raila.

The Azimio NDC will be used to crown the ODM leader as its presidential flagbearer in what could put the negotiations with Kalonzo in jeopardy.

Last week, Kalonzo caused jitters when he revealed the secretive National Super Alliance (Nasa) agreement with Raila as the reference for coalition talks with the Azimio la Umoja Movement.

According to the document, Raila had agreed to stand down for Kalonzo in 2022 whether or not he won the presidential election in 2017.

“My brother has the option of abiding by the terms of this live binding, legal agreement and thereby emerging as a true, national, regional, and indeed continental democratic hero,” said Kalonzo.
