Rare photo of Raila Odinga and fellow lecturers emerge amid questions over his degree

by Amos Khaemba

According to the Biography of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga, he has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from a University in Germany.

The former prime minister is also listed to have been lectured at the University of Nairobi in the early 1970s.

But many of his political critics have doubted his academic credentials saying there is no actual evidence to indicate that the ODM leader attended a university education.

Some people have previously challenged the 2022 presidential frontrunner to at least provide names of his classmate or those he taught with at UON.

But on Tuesday, June 14, a photo of the then youthful Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition presidential flag bearer and his fellow lectures has emerged.

In the photo taken from the Odinga family gallery, taken in 1972, the ODM leader is dressed in a black suit with a white shirt.

Most of Raila’s colleagues in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi were of White origin as shown in the photo.

On Tuesday, June 14, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a party Deputy President William Ruto said will use to seek the presidency challenged Raila Odinga to come clean on which university he graduated from.

“Questions have also been asked about the credibility of presidential candidates’ qualifications. You have seen a lot of headlines questioning the university that our biggest opponent, Raila Amolo Odinga, qualified from,” UDA secretary-general Veronica Maina said.

Last month controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna challenged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to make public the original copy of Raila Odinga’s university certificate before clearing him.

“He was a lab technician. During the Cold War, degrees from the Eastern Block were not recognized in Kenya. To become an engineer with a purported degree in engineering from East Germany, Raila would have to have studied engineering at the UoN and he didn’t.” Miguna Miguna said in 2019.

According to the Constitution of Kenya 2010, for one to be cleared to vie for the country’s top seat must be a holder of a degree from a University recognized in Kenya
