Renowned blogger Robert Alai joins politics, to vie for parliamentary seat

by Enock Ndayala

Celebrated blogger Robert Alai has officially declared his interest to unseat Nyando MP Jared Okelo in the 2022 General Election.

In his six-point manifesto released on Monday, November 8, the controversial blogger said his wish is to transform Nyando Constituency from within.

“Having been born and brought up largely in Nyando, and having actively participated in national and party politics as a voter and advisor… it is against this backdrop that my interest to serve my people sprouts,” Robert Alai said.

Some of the critical areas Alai said will prioritize include Education and ICT, health and agriculture, arts, sports, and the creative economy infrastructure (road and electricity) and security.

His announcement to vie for the Nyando parliamentary seat comes barely a week after the blogger was forced to share his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate after a heated exchange with Kirinyaga Women Rep Wangui Ngirici.

This was Alai who was giving his thoughts on the current national debate about whether Kenyan politicians need academic qualifications.

“Good morning! Purity Wangui Ngirici scored what at Kariti Secondary School? Hebu guys share. She now claims to have what degree? Let’s clean the mess now,” Alai tweeted.

In what appeared to be personal insults, Ngirici who has announced plans to unseat embattled Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru in the 2022 General Election claimed that Alai was suspended from his former secondary school.

“My friend Fisherman, don’t bend your “big” head to ignorance and malice. All my academic records are straight and available with the relevant institutions. Instead, tell us what made you get suspended in Onjiko Secondary,” Ngirici fired back at Alai.

But Alai today said that he will source bursaries and alternative funding from corporates and partners to guarantee prompt and equitable distribution to ensure needy students get quality education.
