Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has declared his interest in the County’s senatorial seat in the 2022 General Elections.

During a funeral ceremony of Friday, October 1, Mandago who will be retiring in 2022 dismissed claims that someone vying for the position has to be a legal practitioner.

The Uasin Gishu governor, who is a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto said that any citizen has the right to contest for the seat.

“Let me ask you, is our senator Margaret Kamar a lawyer by profession? It is up to the people to decide who will represent them in the county assembly, governor or MP,” he said.

The Uasin Gishu governor is seeking the senatorial seat after serving two terms as the county boss under a Jubilee ticket.

Just like Mandago, a number of second-term governors are making political plans as their terms comes to an end.

Siaya Governor Cornell Rasanga has declared interest to contest for a parliamentary seat in Alego Usonga constituency.

His declaration has not been well received by Siaya Senator James Orengo, who argued that Rasanga should quit local politics and focus on supporting Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

“I want Rasanga to join forces with other second-term governors to pull their resources and synergies to campaign for Raila,” Orengo told the People Daily.

However, Rasanga has remained unbowed, showing determination to contest for the parliamentary seat.

“If they want me at the national arena, then Alego–Usonga people will take me there. I am not retiring from politics any time soon,” Rasanga said.

As other retiring governors battle for elective seats, some are eyeing appointments in the next government.

One is Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho who dropped his presidential bid to support Raila Odinga.

Joho has his eyes set on appointments in the National Assembly or Senate if Raila Odinga wins the presidency.
